Knowledge into Practice
(Module 6)
This is the final module needed to complete the Pain Management Certification. The core principle of this module is to embed the knowledge gained through the previous five modules. The interactive 12-week online format includes working in groups, weekly discussion sessions and three written assignments.
The tasks of the module
A weekly discussion (every Thursday from 7am to 8am) on a topical journal article. The article is posted ahead of time for each participant to read and comment on before Thursday’s discussion which is led by a facilitator knowledgeable in the topic.
Two case studies and a referral letter must be submitted and these tasks allow participants to make the bold leap of taking their new skills into the clinical setting. Support is given by class and facilitator feedback.
Prior to beginning the module participants are required to select from a list of books/ TED talks and films and write a reflection of their chosen readings (two books and one TED talk/film). Working with patients in pain requires an enhanced understanding of what it is to be human and the aim of this section of Module 6 is to allow each individual to deepen their own understanding of how they feel and respond to different life stories.
The list of readings is available under the Resources tab of the Train Pain Academy website, you are encouraged to watch and read the material in preparation for Module 6 and even if you are just starting the journey of learning about pain.
By the end of this module participants will:
- Use analytical, critical and evaluative thinking for valid and flexible assessment and treatment approaches using a patient-centred biopsychosocial approach.
- Develop and implement a treatment plan based on a diagnostic formulation using evidence informed strategies
- Demonstrate reflective practice through an iterative written case assignment that requires participants to respond to feedback and self-reflection on application of skills
- Demonstrate effective interprofessional communication through the means of a referral letter to another health care professional
- Apply the skills needed to become a lifelong learner and an autonomous self-directed practitioner
